2013 NHL Fantasy Hockey Sleeper Picks

The 2013 NHL Hockey Season is back and while most NHL fantasy pool general managers are looking at who the popular NHL fantasy pool picks are, the smart guys are the ones analyzing the 2013 NHL fantasy sleepers that will make or break their fantasy season.

Finding NHL Fantasy Sleepers takes a lot of digging and a lot of research, but it can pay off for your NHL fantasy pool in the end. Whether you’re playing Daily Fantasy Hockey or simply in your buddy’s NHL fantasy hockey pool, picking the top sleepers will help you win money in the end.

Everyone knows to spend the money on the big names like Stamkos, Crosby and Ovechkin, but when you are down to the bottom of your salary cap dollars, or looking at the low end of the lists at the hockey pool draft, our sleeper picks below will be handy to finalize your fantasy hockey roster.

Here are our 2013 NHL Sleepers to use when you are filling out your fantasy hockey team:

Forwards Sleeper Picks

Matt Moulson (New York Islanders) – The New York Islanders left winger has scored 30 goals in each of his past 3 NHL seasons. Because he plays for the lowly Islanders, Moulson is often forgotten about in NHL fantasy drafts even though his value increases each year. Playing with John Tavares, Moulson is primed to have a great season even during the shorter NHL schedule.

Jeff Skinner (Carolina Hurricanes) – Skinner is now back to full health. Although he has been dropped to the second line, this could be a boost for his NHL fantasy numbers, as he is playing with newly acquired Jordan Staal and Alex Semin. Skinner could be a low value sleeper pick in all NHL fantasy formats, but will eventually break out and his value will soar as the season and the fantasy points roll along.

Jeff Carter (Los Angeles Kings) – After the trade from Columbus to LA, Carter’s game improved and he played very well during the playoffs. Carter looks to return to the elite status that he was at prior to going to Columbus. Carter will be low on many lists as his stats were weak overall, but snap him up if he is still out there in the middle rounds or at low cost in salary cap daily fantasy hockey.

Chad LaRose (Carolina Hurricanes) – Although we mentioned Jeff Skinner as an NHL sleeper, Chad LaRose has to be mentioned as well. LaRose has shown that he can shoot the puck and Carolina will be experimenting with line combos so look for Semin, Eric or Jordan Staal or Skinner as his linemates. All those guys have the potential for huge fantasy numbers and LaRose could be on their coat tails all year long.

Defensemen Sleeper Picks

Justin Schultz (Edmonton Oilers) – Schultz was tearing up the AHL during the lockout and will have an immediate impact in the NHL in 2013. He will be low on many fantasy lists because of his lack of NHL stats, but don’t sleep on this fantasy sleeper, Schultz will make a big splash with what could be a very high scoring offense in Edmonton.

Sheldon Souray (Anaheim Ducks) – Souray is near the end of his NHL career and the last two seasons show it. He signed with the Ducks and is tagged as being one of their top defensemen and one of the power play fixtures. Souray still has a hard shot and the power play could rejuvenate his career. Souray is a deep fantasy sleeper, but in a short NHL season, he could approach his past glory one more time.

Goalies Sleeper Picks

Devan Dubnyk (Edmonton Oilers) – Dubnyk played well last season and had a .500 record on a team that lost more games than they won. Starting goalie Khabibulin begins the season banged up and Dubnyk could get the chance to shine and score some valuable wins for fantasy owners as the new high octane Edmonton Oilers will win a few more games this season.

Jonas Hiller (Anaheim Ducks) – Don’t know how much of an NHL fantasy sleeper Hiller really is given he had a statistically good season for the Ducks. Most rankings have him as a mid to late round pick which is a steal for a goalie that had a great goals against average and 4 shutouts. Hiller was the workhorse last year in Anaheim and with a short season expect nothing less from him in 2013.
